Glenn Highway & Tok Cutoff

We are officially on our way home as we arrived back in Tok, Alaska today.  It was almost a month ago when we first came through Tok on our way to Fairbanks.  We drove a loop of 1,432 miles through Alaska.  The road to Tok was full of frost heaves, gravel and construction sites.  Linda said it was practice for the trip in Canada on the Alaska Highway.

Yesterday, we were at the Grand View RV Park and we took advantage of a break in the rainy weather and went for a walk on a glacier.  The Matanuska Glacier has not changed in over 400 years.

View from a distance

If you look very close, you can see people walking on the glacier.

One of the fissures in the ice - I think if you fell in there, you might not be found for many, many years.  They recommend a guided tour with the proper gear if you wanted to venture out onto the glacier.

Driving down the highway, we spotted an eagle sitting on a rock in a river.  There are more eagles in Alaska than there are in the entire Lower 48.

Just read the sign - it's interesting.

This is the view at the pull-over where the above sign was posted.   It's a little scary thinking that volcanoes here in Alaska can erupt at any time.  They call Alaska "The Land of Fire and Ice" - volcanoes and glaciers.  So incredible.
